Applications

A clearer starting point for comparing research powders, from a recognized formula to a tightly controlled experimental brief.

[Narrow your material choices](<https://powdchem.com/applications/materials-research/#first-choice>) [Ask about your requirement](<https://powdchem.com/request-a-quote/?topic=Materials+research>)

## Are you studying a finished sheet or making it yourself?

Choose the experimental starting material before comparing purity or particle size.

Narrow your material shortlist

| Your requirement | Start by comparing | What can change the choice | Explore materials |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| You need prepared platelets or sheets | GNPs or BNNS, according to the required chemistry | Sheet width and thickness are separate. Keep the supplied surface state with the sample characterization. | [Graphene nanoplatelets powder (C)](<https://powdchem.com/products/graphene-nanoplatelets-powder/>)[Boron nitride nanosheets powder (BN)](<https://powdchem.com/products/boron-nitride-nanosheets-powder/>) |
| You plan to produce MXene from a precursor | The specified MAX phase, such as Ti3AlC2 | A MAX precursor and a prepared MXene serve different steps; a precursor analysis does not describe the final sheets. | [Ti3AlC2 MAX phase powder (Ti3AlC2)](<https://powdchem.com/products/laboratory-powders/max-phases/#pc-245>)[Ti3C2Tx MXene powder (Ti3C2Tx)](<https://powdchem.com/products/laboratory-powders/mxenes/#pc-252>) |
| You are comparing adsorption behavior | A named MOF or support | Use the same activation and measurement conditions; pore data from differently prepared samples are difficult to compare. | [ZIF-8 powder (Zn(C4H5N2)2)](<https://powdchem.com/products/laboratory-powders/mof-porous-materials/#pc-255>)[UiO-66 powder (Zr6O4(OH)4(C8H4O4)6)](<https://powdchem.com/products/laboratory-powders/mof-porous-materials/#pc-257>)[Gamma alumina support powder (Al2O3)](<https://powdchem.com/products/laboratory-powders/catalysts-supports/#pc-268>) |

Start with the task closest to yours. The examples identify material requests; a proposed grade still needs to fit your process and evaluation.

## Layered and nanosheet studies

For a study defined by sheets or platelets, begin with the chemistry and supplied form. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) are separate material requests.

### Materials to explore

[Graphene nanoplatelets powder (C)](<https://powdchem.com/products/graphene-nanoplatelets-powder/>) [Boron nitride nanosheets powder (BN)](<https://powdchem.com/products/boron-nitride-nanosheets-powder/>)

### What changes the comparison

Record width across the sheet and thickness separately. Keep the size method and surface treatment with each result.

## MAX and MXene work

For precursor conversion, start with the complete MAX formula. For an already-prepared MXene, start with its composition, Tx surface terminations and powder or dispersion state.

[MAX Phases](<https://powdchem.com/products/laboratory-powders/max-phases/>) [MXenes](<https://powdchem.com/products/laboratory-powders/mxenes/>)

### What changes the comparison

Keep precursor phase content separate from the characterization of the resulting sheets.

## Porous materials and catalyst studies

Choose a framework, a support or a supported catalyst according to the material your experiment actually requires.

### What changes the comparison

Compare activation or pretreatment, residual solvent and the method behind pore or surface-area data.

## Composition and impurity studies

Use the exact oxide and the elements that need to be controlled. A headline purity percentage leaves the individual impurity limits unresolved.

### What changes the comparison

Compare assay basis and reporting limits using the same units and analytical scope.

## Prepare a useful comparison

A reference datasheet or your existing material code is useful. If you are still exploring, describe what you are making and which result needs to change.

- Material name, formula or reference grade
- Experiment and critical variables
- Evaluation quantity and document needs
- Acceptance method and preferred timing
